When you attend please bring your own vase. You are welcome to cut as many flowers as you wish for your take home bouquet - the charge is $2 per stem.

Lyndsi and Colton Gully, the farm's owners, will be on hand to provide advice on best cutting methods.

Super El Niño and what it might mean for Colorado

Super El Niños can significantly alter weather patterns around the world

A Super El Niño is an unusually strong El Niño event, occurring when sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean become much warmer than average for an extended period. These events are rare, the best-known having occurred in 1982-83, 1997-98, and 2015-16.

While there is no official scientific definition of "super" El Niño, the term is commonly used for the strongest El Niño events.

For Colorado, the impacts are less predictable than in many other regions. El Niño changes the odds of certain weather patterns rather than guaranteeing specific conditions.

Potential Effects on Colorado: Increased Chance of Moisture
A strong El Niño often favors wetter-than-average conditions, especially in southern Colorado, during the fall, winter, and sometimes spring. That can benefit reservoirs, soil moisture, and winter snowpack (although every event is different).

Snowfall
Southern mountain ranges may have an increased chance of above-average snowfall during winter. Northern Colorado tends to show a weaker or more variable response.

Better Soil Moisture
If additional precipitation materializes, landscapes, forests, and gardens may recover from drought stress more quickly, and spring wildflowers can be more abundant.

Wildfire
Research suggests that the spring and summer following a fall El Niño may see a reduced risk of widespread wildfire across parts of the Southwest and Rocky Mountains because of improved moisture, though this depends on how much precipitation actually falls.

Temperature
Colorado can still experience warm periods during an El Niño. A wetter pattern does not necessarily mean a cooler one, and heat waves remain possible.

What it could mean for gardeners if Colorado receives more moisture than normal

Less irrigation may be needed
Trees and shrubs could experience less drought stress
Lawns and perennial gardens may remain greener longer
There may also be more weed pressure and a greater risk of fungal diseases because of increased humidity and rainfall

Keep Expectations Realistic
Colorado sits in a transition zone where many weather systems interact. Even during a strong El Niño, local weather is influenced by elevation, storm tracks, the North American monsoon, and other climate patterns. As a result, one part of the state may be wetter than average while another remains dry.

Current Outlook
Climate agencies are monitoring a developing El Niño and some forecast models indicate it could become very strong, but there is still uncertainty about its ultimate strength and exactly how it will affect Colorado. Forecast confidence generally improves as the event develops through late summer and fall.

Colorado's hot summers, intense sunshine, low humidity, and drying winds can be tough on flowers.

Choosing heat- and drought-tolerant varieties is one of the best ways to keep your landscape colorful even during extended heat waves.

Top Wilt-Resistant Flowers for Colorado

Blanket Flower (Gaillardia) - One of the toughest perennials for Colorado, blanket flower thrives in full sun, poor soils, and hot, dry conditions. It blooms from early summer into fall with cheerful red, orange, and yellow flowers.

When temperatures soar, it's common for tomato plants to slow down or even stop producing fruit.

While the plants may look healthy and continue growing, extreme heat can interfere with flowering, pollination, and fruit development.

If your tomatoes, for example, are flowering but not producing during a heat wave, the weather is likely the primary cause. Keep plants healthy with consistent care, and they should begin setting fruit again when temperatures return to a more favorable range.

When daytime temperatures remain above 90–95°F for days, many plants begin conserving energy by:

Slowing growth
Wilting during the afternoon
Dropping flowers or developing fewer blooms
Producing smaller fruits
Ripening more slowly

Heat Reduces Pollination
Tomatoes, for example, produce the best fruit when daytime temperatures are between 70–85°F and nighttime temperatures are 55–70°F. Most flowering plants bloom best when daytime temperatures stay between 65°F and 85°F. Prolonged heat above 90–95°F can reduce flower production, cause buds to drop, or shorten bloom time. When daytime highs consistently exceed 90–95°F or nighttime temperatures stay above 75°F, pollen can become less viable, and flowers may fail to set fruit or may simply drop from the plant.

Roots generally prefer cooler soil than the surrounding air. Mulch helps keep soil temperatures stable and reduces moisture loss during hot weather.

Summer brings an abundance of two prolific herbs - basil and mint. These herbs are bright, herbaceous, and perfect on grilled meats, vegetables, potatoes, or even as a sandwich spread.

Here are some easy recipes to help you use basil and mint, both of which are likely thriving in your garden right now:

Basil Vinaigrette

1 1/2 packed cups of fresh basil leaves
1 small garlic clove cut it 2-4 pieces
1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons sherry or Champagne vinegar
Pinch of crushed red pepper

Add all ingredients to the bowl of a food processor or blender and process until smooth, about 60 seconds. Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 3-5 days.

Classic Basil Pesto

Calcium Nitrate
It is highly valued for promoting robust vegetative growth. Supports strong plant structure and is a fast-acting fertilizer that provides two essential nutrients:

Just like humans and plant life, wildlife struggles during extended stretches of 90+ degree temperatures

This is your reminder to show a little extra love to local wildlife.

During hot, dry weather, natural water sources such as puddles, seasonal creeks, and dew can disappear. Birds, rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, pollinators, and other wildlife must spend extra energy searching for water, and dehydration can become life-threatening for them when they can't local water sources.

Birds cool themselves by panting and evaporating moisture from their respiratory system - much like a dog - which causes them to lose water rapidly.

Pollinators such as bees and butterflies also need reliable water sources to survive and continue pollinating our landscapes, gardens, and fields.

How to help wildlife during a heatwave
Put out a shallow container of fresh water and fill it with fresh water daily (check it mid-day to see if it needs to be refilled). It doesn't have to be anything fancy - a plant saucer, pie pan, bird bath, or shallow bowl all work well.

If you have a birdbath, fill it with fresh water daily (twice a day if needed).

A few tips:
• Keep it shallow. One to two inches of water is plenty for most wildlife.
• Add a few rocks, pebbles, or sticks. They provide safe landing spots for bees, butterflies, and small birds and help prevent insects from drowning.
• Place it in the shade. Cooler water stays fresh longer and is more inviting during the hottest part of the day.
• Refresh it daily. Water evaporates quickly in the summer heat, and fresh water is healthier for wildlife.
• Clean the container every day or two. A quick rinse helps prevent algae and discourages mosquito larvae from developing.
• If you have a bird bath, moving water from a small solar fountain or dripper can attract even more birds while helping keep the water fresh.
• Avoid placing water immediately next to dense shrubs where outdoor cats or other predators could hide.

You may be surprised by the variety of birds, butterflies, bees, rabbits, squirrels, and other visitors that stop by for a drink.

Hummingbirds
During a heat wave, keep hummingbird feeders clean and filled with fresh nectar, replacing the solution every 1–2 days to prevent spoilage in the heat. If the nectar in your hummingbird feeder looks even a little bit cloudy, this is a sign that bacteria is growing. Toss the nectar and provide fresh solution immediately.

Providing shallow water sources, flowering plants, and shady resting spots can also help hummingbirds stay hydrated, cool, and healthy during periods of extreme summer temperatures.

What gardens were like in 1776

Two hundred and fifty years ago, at the time of the American Revolution, gardens were essential to everyday life.

Many modern gardens are often created for beauty or recreation, but most colonial gardens were designed to provide food, medicine, household supplies, and feed for livestock.

Every available space was put to use, and gardening was considered a necessary life skill.

Kitchen Gardens
Nearly every household maintained a kitchen garden close to the home. These gardens supplied fresh produce throughout the growing season and often included:

Beans
Peas
Cabbage
Onions
Carrots
Beets
Turnips
Lettuce
Squash
Pumpkins

Vegetables were eaten fresh, then preserved by drying, pickling, or storing in root cellars for winter.

Herb Gardens

Lavender Festival - July 18-19, Denver Botanic Gardens Chatfield. More than 2,000 lavender plants set the scene for this family-friendly celebration of Chatfield Farms' Lavender Garden.

Hollyhock and Arts Festival, July 25, 2026, in Saguache. Hollyhock, was one of the earliest plants brought to the New World and the town of Saguache has embraced them in a big way. 10am to 3pm.

Catfacing is typically caused by environmental factors that affect tomato plants during their early development. Some common causes include cold air temperatures, too-cold soil, fluctuating temps, and exposure to certain herbicides or stress during flowering and fruit set.

These conditions can disrupt the normal growth and development of the tomato fruit, resulting in irregularities in shape and appearance.

Wildfire smoke doesn't just affect people - it can also negatively affect the health of plants and trees.

While most established plants can tolerate short periods of smoke, prolonged exposure combined with heat and drought can reduce growth, interfere with photosynthesis, and place additional stress on landscapes.

Reduced Photosynthesis
Smoke blocks and scatters sunlight, reducing the amount of light available for photosynthesis. With less energy from the sun, plants may grow more slowly and produce fewer flowers, fruits, or vegetables. Fortunately, most healthy plants recover once clear skies return.

Clogged Leaf Surfaces
Ash and fine particles can settle on leaves, partially blocking the tiny pores called stomata. These pores allow plants to exchange gases and regulate water loss. A heavy coating of ash may temporarily reduce this process, although light rain or irrigation often washes the particles away.

Heat and Drought Stress
Wildfire smoke is frequently accompanied by hot, dry weather. Trees and plants may already be struggling with limited soil moisture, making them more susceptible to pests, diseases, and leaf scorch. Newly planted trees and shallow-rooted vegetables are especially vulnerable.

Delay fertilizing or heavy pruning until plants have recovered from the stress.
Continue harvesting ripe fruits and vegetables to encourage ongoing production.

Colorado Considerations
Colorado gardeners often experience smoky periods during summer. In most cases, smoke alone causes only temporary effects, but when combined with prolonged drought and high temperatures, it can significantly increase plant stress. Avoiding these common mistakes can help your flowers, vegetables, trees, and shrubs survive periods of extreme heat.

Heat waves can stress even healthy plants, and well-intentioned gardening habits may do more harm than good when temperatures soar.

Consistent watering, good mulch, minimal pruning, and careful observation will help your landscape and garden emerge healthy once cooler weather returns.

Avoid the mistakes below and help your plants do well through the heat.

1. Watering Too Shallowly
A quick sprinkle wets only the soil surface, encouraging shallow roots that dry out quickly. Instead, water deeply and less frequently so moisture reaches the entire root zone. Use a moisture meter to make sure your watering has soaked down to a depth of 6-12 inches.

2. Watering in the Middle of the Day
While watering at midday won't burn leaves, much of the water evaporates before it reaches the roots. Water early in the morning whenever possible, or in the evening if morning isn't an option.

3. Forgetting to Mulch
Bare soil heats up rapidly and loses moisture quickly. Apply 2–3 inches of organic mulch, such as shredded bark, straw, or compost, to keep roots cooler and reduce evaporation. Keep mulch a few inches away from plant stems and tree trunks.

4. But don't overwater
Heat-stressed plants may wilt during the afternoon even when the soil is adequately moist. Check the soil before watering. Constantly soggy soil deprives roots of oxygen and can lead to root rot.

5. Fertilizing During Extreme Heat

8. Letting Vegetables Go Too Long Between HarvestsHarvest vegetables like cucumbers, zucchini, beans, peppers, and tomatoes regularly. Keeping mature fruit on the plant requires energy that could otherwise support new growth and continued production.

9. Skipping Temporary Shade
Young plants, leafy greens, and recently transplanted flowers benefit from afternoon shade during extreme heat. Shade cloth, patio umbrellas, or even lightweight sheets can reduce heat stress without blocking all the sunlight.

10. Neglecting Newly Planted Trees and ShrubsNew landscape plants have limited root systems and need consistent moisture during their first few growing seasons. Check them frequently, especially after several days of high temperatures.

11. Walking on Dry Lawns

Tomato blight and how to prevent it

Tomato blight is a general term for several fungal-like diseases that attack tomato plants, causing leaf spots, stem damage, and fruit rot.

The two most common types are early blight and late blight. While they have different causes, both can weaken plants, reduce yields, and spread quickly under cool, wet, or humid conditions.

Symptoms typically appear on lower leaves as tiny dark brown spots on lower leaves soon after fruit set. Spots enlarge to >0.5” in diameter and develop a grayish-white center with a darker border. As the spots enlarge, they develop concentric, target-like rings. Spots may also develop on fruit and stems.

Fortunately, good gardening practices can significantly reduce the risk of blight.

Early Blight typically appears first on the lower leaves as small brown spots with distinctive concentric rings, giving them a "target-like" appearance. As the disease progresses, leaves turn yellow, wither, and drop, leaving plants stressed and fruit exposed to sunscald. Early blight often survives in infected plant debris and soil, making garden sanitation especially important.

Late Blight is more aggressive and can destroy a tomato crop in a matter of days under favorable conditions. Symptoms include large, dark, water-soaked lesions on leaves and stems, followed by white, fuzzy growth on the undersides of leaves during humid weather. Fruit develops firm, brown patches that continue to rot after harvest.

How to Prevent Tomato Blight
1. Plant Resistant Varieties
Choose tomato varieties with resistance or tolerance to common diseases whenever possible. There are many varieties of resistant tomatoes which will be described in seed catalogues. Resistance does not guarantee that early blight will not occur, but damage will be less severe.
2. Give Plants Plenty of Space
Space tomatoes 24–36 inches apart to improve air circulation and help foliage dry quickly after rain or watering.
3. Water at the Base
Avoid wetting the leaves. Drip irrigation or soaker hoses are ideal because they keep foliage dry and reduce disease spread.
4. Mulch Around Plants
Apply 2–3 inches of straw, shredded leaves, or compost around the base of plants to prevent soil from splashing onto leaves during rain or watering.
5. Prune Lower Leaves
Remove the bottom 6–12 inches of foliage once plants are established to improve airflow and reduce contact with soil.
6. Rotate Crops
Avoid planting tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, or eggplants in the same location for at least three years, as these crops share many of the same diseases.
7. Remove Infected Leaves Promptly
At the first sign of disease, prune affected leaves and dispose of them in the trash—don't compost heavily infected material.
8. Keep Plants Healthy
Consistent watering, proper fertilization, and sturdy support systems help tomatoes better withstand disease pressure.

Colorado Considerations
Colorado's dry climate naturally reduces blight compared to more humid regions, but summer thunderstorms and overhead irrigation can create conditions that favor disease. Good spacing, mulching, and watering at the soil level go a long way toward keeping plants healthy.

Organic Management
If blight has been a recurring problem, preventive fungicides containing copper or biological products containing Bacillus subtilis can help protect healthy foliage when applied before disease becomes widespread. Always follow the product label and reapply as directed, especially after periods of frequent rain.
