Boiling water to kill weeds is a simple, chemical-free method that works by scalding the plant’s cells and roots, causing them to die back quickly.
Pouring boiling water directly onto unwanted weeds effectively damages their foliage and shallow root systems, making it a quick and cost-effective spot treatment.
However, boiling water doesn’t usually kill deep-rooted or well-established perennial weeds in one go, so repeated applications may be needed to fully exhaust the plant.
It’s important to pour carefully to avoid splashing desirable plants, as the heat can harm any vegetation it touches. While not practical for large garden beds, boiling water is a handy organic option for controlling tough weeds in hard-to-reach spaces without relying on herbicides.
One of our members has tested the boiling water method on young dandelions in her lawn with success. But take note - the grass around the dandelion had yellow rings around where the dandelions were (although the grass did recover over time).
