- January 17 - Benjamin Franklin's Birthday - he introduced kohlrabi to America ("kohlrabi" is a German word from the Italian cavolo rapa, meaning cabbage turnip).
- Trending houseplant: Burro's Tail (shown in picture above) sports long trailing stems that can grow to 4 feet in length. Prefers bright sunlight either direct or partial for at least 4 hours per day. Water twice a month. Best in a hanging pot.
- To make a bird shelter, heap branches from trees and shrubs loosely into a pile.
- Celebrate the new gardening year by starting geranium (Pelargonium) seeds indoors; transplant in late May early June to summer containers. Full sun brings consistent blooms. Remember to harden off the seedlings before transplanting.
