Here’s how to keep 'holiday' cactus healthy and blooming year after year
Light & Location
- Place in bright, indirect light — near a north or east-facing window is perfect.
- Avoid harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the pads, but don’t leave it in deep shade either — it needs enough light to bloom.
- In summer, it can enjoy time outdoors in the shade, but bring it in before temperatures drop below 50°F.
Watering
- Keep soil evenly moist during active growth (Spring/Summer through flowering).
- Water from the top only when the top inch of soil feels dry — don’t let it sit in water, as soggy roots cause rot. Once the soil feels dry, water.
- In Colorado winter, set the pot on a pebble tray with water for humidity.
- If you see buds dripping, that's a sign it is too dry.
- After blooming, let the soil dry a bit more between waterings to let the plant rest.
Feeding & Blooming
- Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4–6 weeks from Spring through early fall. Stop feeding once buds appear.
- To encourage blooms, the cactus needs cool nights (around 55–60°F) and 12–14 hours of darkness for about six weeks in Fall — this triggers flower bud formation.
- Once buds appear, return the plant to bright light and resume regular watering. Avoid moving it, as changes in light or temperature can make buds drop.
- It's common for these plants to blooms for four weeks or more.
Soil & Repotting
- Use a well-draining potting mix, ideally one made for succulents or orchids (light and airy).
- Repot every 2–3 years, preferably after blooming, only going up one pot size.
After Bloom Care
- When flowers fade, trim back any leggy segments to shape the plant. You can root these cuttings easily in moist soil or water to start new plants.
- Allow the cactus to rest for about 6 weeks with minimal watering, then resume normal care.
Remember that in our dry climate you'll need to check the plant weekly to make sure the soil is appropriately moist. Consistent watering is essential for these plants - too little or too much can cause buds to drop.
