Nature as Teacher - Mindfulness Classes from Douglas Land Conservancy

6/22/2020

Picture
Quiet your thoughts and connect with the healing gifts of nature through Douglas Land Conservancy's new nature as teacher classes in June and July.

The mindfulness series was planned long before anyone heard of COVID 19. Originally planned as outdoor, in-person events, these virtual opportunities offer an antidote to our current situation. Participants are invited to observe native surroundings in new ways and learn practical skills to take these insights into daily living.

The ancient practice of mindfulness is currently embraced across many sectors of society and research bears out the benefits. Whether it's lessening anxiety or depression, dealing with insomnia, reducing reactivity or increasing compassion, practicing mindfulness on a regular basis gives us skills to more effectively deal with the storms of life as well as deepen our joyful experiences. Participants will learn life enhancing and research-based strategies by focusing on experiences in nature.

The program is not cumulative and you may participate in one or both classes.

Quieting the Mind - June 27, 9 - 10:45am

Nature is the perfect backdrop for learning essential skills to help quiet our minds and calm our souls. Discover how elements in nature can teach us to tap into the stillness within and reset our nervous system. REGISTER FOR JUNE 27 HERE.

Unplug and Recharge - July 15 and July 25, 9 - 10:45am
Americans now spend 93% of their time indoors and stimulated by electronics. Many times, we are more of human "doings" instead of human beings. Spending time in nature helps us to relax, lower stress levels and anxiety levels. By opening our senses, we can bridge the gap between our busy lives and the natural world.

Logistics:
You will gather via Zoom for an overview and instruction. There will be 30 minutes when we leave Zoom and participants will practice the skills taught in a natural setting of their choice - it could be your backyard, a quiet walk near your home or you may choose to drive to a location with cell service for the entire class experience. After the 30 minute practice in nature, we will conclude the class by gathering via Zoom to discuss our experiences in small groups and questions will be answered by the facilitator. Participants will need a timing device such as a cell phone or watch. Each class will take place from 9:00 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. The program is not cumulative and you may participate in one or both classes.

Space is limited. The Nature as Mindfulness Teacher classes are free, but a $10 per person/per class donation to DLC is suggested so that we may continue to offer quality programs such as this.

New "pop-up" garden center open in Castle Rock - but only through end of June

6/8/2020

Plum Creek Garden Market started in 2013 to sell locally grown, high-quality flowers and plants directly to the community. Since that time they have run a pop-up seasonal-only market in Castle Rock, and this year have expanded to locations in Golden (17204 S. Golden Rd.) and Denver (2150 S. Monaco Pkwy.).

Each is open daily through the end of June.

"We like to supply plants that are native to Colorado that you would only be able to find in an independent garden center," say Jeremy Friedman, owner. "We try to cater to each location's needs...for example, Castle Rock seems to have a lot of deer, so we stock deer resistant plants and flowers there."

With COVID-19, the company is taking precautions to keep employees and customers safe, including maintaining cleanliness of the greenhouse space, limiting customers, encouraging distancing, wearing masks, and asking customers to shop the markets during the week to limit overcrowding on weekends.

The Castle Rock Plum Creek Garden Market is located at 1506 S. Wilcox Street.
