Did you know that one of the first plants brought to the New World was a hollyhock? The good folks in Saguache know - they've been growing them in the San Luis Valley since the 1800s, and have an entire festival devoted to them!
According to the Saguache Chamber of Commerce, the hollyhock's hardiness, drought tolerance, and soil adaptability supported its cultivation throughout the Middle East, Europe, and North America.
Hollyhocks growing in our Southwestern Region are probably descendants of the first seeds planted in the late 1800s when the area became settled.
The festival includes garden tours and hollyhock seed cards will be available.
